About the Artist - Hugh Kepets

Hugh Kepets, a painter and printmaker born in Cleveland, gained recognition for his intense exploration of formal structure in his artwork. He received the 1979 Cleveland Arts Prize for Visual Arts. Kepets, educated at Carnegie Mellon University and Ohio University, initially focused on figural subjects but later transitioned to interiors, exploring still lifes, architectural elements, and corners of buildings. His meticulous work, influenced by precisionists like Charles Sheeler and inspired by artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Robert Motherwell, showcases an abstract approach while retaining verisimilitude. Kepets' preferred media are drawing and prints, evolving into digital printmaking for enhanced color subtlety. His pieces are found in major museums and corporate collections, reflecting his dedication to pleasing himself through uncompromised artistic expression. Kepets resides in Milford, Connecticut, but maintains ties to New York City.
