About the Artist - Marsden Hartley

Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) was an American modernist painter, born in Lewiston, Maine. His artistic career spanned several phases, including Impressionism and Cubism, but he is best known for his contributions to American Modernism. Hartley's early works were influenced by European avant-garde movements, and he spent time in Paris interacting with prominent artists.

One of his most notable series is the "Fishermen's Last Suppers," inspired by his time in the coastal region of Nova Scotia, Canada. His later works are characterized by vibrant colors, bold shapes, and a focus on American subjects, particularly the landscapes and people of Maine.

Hartley's life was marked by personal challenges, including the tragic death of his lover, German officer Karl von Freyburg, during World War I. This loss deeply affected his art, and he created a series of poignant paintings in von Freyburg's memory.
