About the Artist - Thom de Jong

Thom de Jong (December 18, 1940 – 1988) was a Dutch artist born and raised in Amsterdam, known for his unique contributions to painting and graphic arts. Operating primarily in Amsterdam and New York, he engaged in a distinctive technique for his graphical work, focusing on relief prints. In this intricate process, he would draw on a Perspex plate, cut it into puzzle-like pieces, and individually ink each piece in different colors. The assembled puzzle, with its inked surface, was then pressed onto paper, resulting in relief prints that embodied a tangible texture.

De Jong held solo exhibitions at prominent galleries in cities like New York City, Amsterdam, Boston, Los Angeles, and Paris, showcasing his distinctive style. Notable exhibitions include those at BAC Gallery in New York City and AMRO Gallery in Amsterdam. His artistry, marked by labor-intensive and unique methods, left an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene. Thom de Jong's life was cut short at the age of 48 in 1988, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and visually engaging works that continue to captivate audiences, looking modern even by todays standards.
