About the Artist - Ben Shahn

Ben Shahn (1898-1969) was an influential American artist known for his contributions to social realism and his unique artistic style. He was born in Lithuania and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1906. Shahn studied art in New York and became associated with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression, where he created powerful murals and paintings that depicted the struggles of the working class.


One of the most notable aspects of Shahn's career was his commitment to social and political causes. He used his art as a medium for activism, addressing issues such as labor rights, civil rights, and anti-war sentiments. Shahn's work continues to be celebrated for its social consciousness and unique blend of realism and modernism.
