About the Artist - James Coignard
James Coignard was a French painter, ceramicist, sculptor and writer (1925-2008). Coignard got his early break in Scandinavia, having lived in Sweden for a short period. However he was always very taken with Côte d’Azur (French Riviera) which were landscapes that inspired much of his work and he lived most of his life between there and Paris. In the early 1960s he began to work with glass, which led to experiments with engraving, which would then become a major focus of his art style for the rest of his career. He went on to travel the world through his art and became known as one of the greatest painter-engravers of his time. He continued to produce a wide array of work right up to his untimely death in 2008, leaving behind an incredible body of work.
