About the Artist - Mati Klarwein

Mati Klarwein (1932-2002) was a German-born American artist best known for his imaginative and surreal paintings. Raised in a multicultural environment, Klarwein's work often reflected a blend of influences from his Jewish and European heritage, as well as his travels in Africa and the Americas. He gained prominence during the 1960s counterculture movement, creating iconic album covers like Santana's "Abraxas" and Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew."

Klarwein's art is characterized by vibrant colors and dreamlike imagery, blending elements of mysticism, sexuality, and spirituality. He was deeply inspired by the works of Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dali. One interesting story is that he claimed to have vivid dreams that directly influenced his art. His ability to capture the psychedelic and transcendental spirit of his era left an indelible mark on the visual culture of the time and remains influential in contemporary art.
